Let’s make no bones about it the Salesforce Administrator ADM-201 is a tough certification to attain, remembering the Salesforce limits is tough as well as having to stop your thought process running away thinking “I know this can be achieved this way but would it be considered best practice”. There is a fine balance with the Salesforce Administrator exam between knowing too much and knowing to little. This is a certification however where corners cannot be cut, you either know it or you don’t.

Disclaimer: This is aimed at being a starting point and a way to find resources but shouldn’t be relied upon solely.

Use Your Free Dev Org

To use an analogy from cycling when a reporter once asked Fausto Coppi (a famous cyclist) what it took to be a great champion, he replied “Ride your bike, ride your bike, ride your bike”. The Salesforce equivalent would be “Use your Dev Org, use your Dev Org, use your Dev Org”. It is paramount that you sign up for a free Dev Org (and use it) in order to expand your Salesforce knowledge, try out new functionality, find different ways of reaching a solution and most importantly will back up your knowledge in a practical way. In a perfect world we would all get the entire experience from our Salesforce based roles but this is very rare. Using the Salesforce Dev Org is fun too, like a big jigsaw puzzle.

    1. I’ve attempted the 201 exam 4 times to no avail after almost a year of studying through video tutorials and the online training orgs as well as playing in the sandbox. I’m hurt and depressed and out of a lot of money. But the only way to get the job that’s on the line is to pass the test. Any suggestions on how to conquer this “demon”?

      1. Hi Charles,

Do you have any on-the-job experience?

I’ve been working as an SFDC analyst for a company for six months and am just now preparing for my cert exam.

Without the real-world experiences of building reports, creating fields, etc. I would have a MUCH harder time absorbing this content.

      2. Hi Charles, sorry to hear you’re finding it difficult.

I would suggest going through the study guide bullet point by bullet point and firstly finding resources against each. Once you have collated all the information, read through it but as a secondary action against each point have a practical element. The practical element is going into your free Dev Org and practising each specific area, creating scenario’s so your learning through multiple pathways.

My second bit of advice would be that not all companies have the ADM-201 as a pre-requisite to being a Salesforce Administrator so look for these ones. The job hunting game at this level is a numbers game, you should be making about 15-20 applications a week. This will increase your interview pipeline then it will lead to getting a position.

Next element is about resetting 2 things: Firstly your internal voice, the way you speak to yourself, stop beating yourself up and being the victim and set aside 2 hours per day minimum to get through the study guide. Secondly reset your ‘I give up’ point, it sounds like your give up point is around 25% of where it needs to be, you still have a bit more time to go but if you do the work, good thing will come.

Spend $40 and sign up to http://www.certifiedondemand.com , I’m not affiliated to this site but John Coppedge has done a fantastic job in putting together a great resource which will save you lots of time.

Lastly you need to ‘show your mettle’ and do whatever it takes to learn the information.

Best of luck and post here to let me know how you are getting on.

  1. Gday Rob….
What would be your estimate on the study time for the ADM201 via cloudsocius free approach ?
    Cheers Mate…

    1. Gday Lester, blimey that is the $64,000 question. It largely depends on real experience, the ADM-201 is a very tough exam.

I would use the study guide and stay very closely to this, have notes and links against each point. Test it out in a Dev Org until you’re comfortable.

Then when you feel ready give it a go, there’s no limit on the number of times you can attempt the exam.

      1. Hi Rob, many thanks for this, the free org loaded with data is great for hands on experience if you’re not actually doing Sys Admin work.

  2. Thank you so much! Looks like a great study guide!!!! Thanks a lot for spending a lot of time preparing this in the intention of helping others. God bless you!

  3. Rob – I have had several people tell me there are flash cards available online that are a great help in studying for ADM201 (which I am signed up to take at Dreamforce two weeks from today), but I have not been able to find any current ones. Do you know where they are hiding?

  4. Hey Rob,

Quick question : Under Specific Areas To Pass The Salesforce Administrator (ADM-201) I only see items related to Security, Data model, Standard/Custom objects, Reports & Dashboards

Is knowledge on these areas good enough to clear the exam ?

Started preparing for the ADM201 and was trying to target the shortest time frame to target it

    Thanks

  5. Also, wondering if there is a source from where we can get the basic CRM data readily imported to my force.com Dev Org.

Not sure how folks around here are practising scenarios and what test bed is being used.

  6. Hi Rob,

I have experience managing salesforce from a user’s perspective since I used to work in a sales role. Now I am interested in gaining more experience with Salesforce and becoming an admin though I do not have any programming/IT background. What would you advise me to do in order to get the salesforce certification? Would it be helpful in finding a position if I do not have any prior SF developer experience?

    Thanks,
    Pinki

  7. Good job Rob, this is my next career path am pursuing ….

Looking forward to getting a junior role as an Administrator .

    Chao !!!

  8. I did not pass the first try. I am not discouraged because now I know the test mechanics. I just need to study and practice.
